In the 1960’s, the Soil Conservation Service, now known as the NRCS (Natural Resources Conservation Service), which is an agency of the federal USDA, and which is part of the Soil Conservation District, built a number of dams to prevent flooding in Garrett County.
Six of those dams eliminated the massive flooding that was occurring in downtown Oakland, Maryland, many times per year. Below are photos of two of those dam builds: Winter’s Dam and the Hospital Dam.
