Conservation Best Practices for Agriculture

This section contains agricultural best practices that farmers can do to help improve soil and water quality on their farms. Improved soil and water quality increases productivity and raises the value of the farm.

There are cost-share programs to off-set the costs of some of these practices, and you can find more information about those in our sections about local funding.

But we know that not all farmers want to participate in cost-share funding. And that is okay. But even if farmers don’t want to pursue cost-share help, implementing agricultural best management practices is a win for the farm.

Look through this section and see if there are some practices that you could apply to your farm that will:

  • Improve soil health and reduce erosion sediment run-off
  • Protect or improve water quality
  • Increase profits by reducing costs, increasing production, or both
  • Provide wildlife habitat or food
  • Improve air quality by reducing odors or other pollutants
  • May qualify for state and/or federal cost-share and financial assistance
Links Will Be Here Once You Start the Section.

These will guide you through different practices in a particular area.

To navigate the section, use the buttons above (which you will find directly below the picture at the top) and links to the left.

The buttons above will guide you through the best conservation practices in various areas of the farm, including “Planting”, “Facilities”, “Water”, “Livestock”, and “Agriculture”.

The links to the left will take you through different conservation practices in that particular area. For example: In the Water area, there is a best management practice for Well Protection.
